Happy Tuesday and happy November, fellow readers. For those of us in the US, it's election day. Hopefully, you are catching this after you have voted. If not, please head to your polling place as every vote matters. And the best part, the political ads will be ending!! Whoo!
Now, on to the good stuff.
This week I have the next to last book club pick for you. This one is a teen/young adult fantasy called Potions and Margaritas by Maria Vermisoglou.
First the triggers:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Clean
Trigger Warnings:
Alcohol and drinking
Magic
Paranormal creatures
Apocalypse style event
Hell
Fighting/Death
With that out of the way, here we go! Maria packed a lot into this one! It is clean with only kissing and brief vague mentions of physical intimacy, so it's good for teens, young adults, and up. The plot has a wonderful build up and there are twists and turns galore.
Calista aka Cal is our FMC, and she is a wonderful character. I enjoyed her starting at a place where she had all the room to grow. I adore her friendship with her coworker Meena as well and of course her budding romance. We won't go there though because of spoilers. I love how her talents are so unique as well.
I think my biggest "gripe" with this novella is that it should be a book or a series. There is so much going on. It needs more room! The characters could get more descriptions. The world building could be even more than it already is and the ending could get the time that it deserves. I know it mentions being in a series, but this book has an ending to it's plot. It needs more. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this read. I just see so much potential in it to be so much more.
I absolutely love the bar. The Eclypse is so much more than it seems. It makes me want to go to a magical bar, and I don't even drink! Maria brings so much intrigue and mystery into these pages. I adore what she has done.
Here is my official review:
I adore the cover of Potions and Margaritas. The novella itself kept my interest. There was a lot to unravel. I enjoyed the myriad of different paranormal beings and mythological creatures. Maria provided a few twists and turns which kept things interesting. Witches, fairies, dark and light, a looming threat, a budding romance, drinks galore, and so much more. I did rate it as four stars instead of five as it could benefit from more editing. It has great bones though and overall provides an enjoyable reading experience.
Yes, I did do four stars only because I would not read it again as it is currently and that's my difference between a four star and a five star review. If it was worked into a longer book or made into a series, I would happily devour it all over again!
Let's see if you agree with me. Go grab your copy of Potions and Margaritas here:
