Happy Tuesday, fellow readers! For my fellow east coasters, are you sick of snow yet? Haha. I got about 8 inches dumped on me just when I finally had my yard back. I'm definitely over it. On the upside, Mardi Gras happened recently and that reminded me to rescue this fabulous murder mystery from my to be read pile. Please join me in a trip to the big easy in "Mardi Gras and Magic" by Jen Pitts.

First, the trigger warnings.

Trigger Warnings:

Murder

Theft

Paranormal entities

Witchcraft and voodoo

Alcohol use

It's a paranormal cozy murder mystery so there isn't anything too crazy. The alcoholic drinks are described in detail in several instances, so I thought I should include that in case a reader would rather avoid that.

I absolutely adore this trip to New Orleans. The attention to detail and that it is during Mardi Gras made it even better. I could practically see the brightly colored homes, smell the fresh beignets, and hear the jazz music playing. I thoroughly enjoyed the magical aspects as well with the paranormal run shops and clubs and of course all the magic.

The story itself was twisty and thrilling and allowed me to follow the clues as a proper mystery should. The characters are just as varied, colorful, and interesting as New Orleans itself. Jen Pitts did a wonderful job with each one, especially Tasso the talking cat. I love that Althea, the female main character, is in her forties and still discovering things about herself and her past. As a woman in my forties, I felt a kinship with her and was able to better connect to her as a character. It's rarer to have an older FMC, and I absolutely loved it.

There is a hint of forbidden romance floating around which is fun. Of course, nothing steamy happened as it's a cozy. But, it added a little more intrigue. There isn't a shortage of mysteries for our heroine and her coven, and I would love to read more.

Here is my official review.

Murder mystery meets Mardi Gras and magic.

I love magic and a good murder mystery. Then, you put those both into a fabulous backdrop of New Orleans during Mardi Gras and it's no wonder that I couldn't put this book down. The details are so well done, and the characters are as colorful and vibrant as NOLA itself. I'm definitely hooked on this series.

That does it for me for this week, dear readers. Please join me again next week for another wonderful recommendation. Until then, curl up with a good book.
