Happy Tuesday, fellow readers! How's your September going? Fall is right around the corner, and it's apple cider season, So I'm happy about that. I love to cozy up in a fuzzy blanket and sip on apple cider and of course read a book. This week's recommendation is perfect as it's a paranormal cozy mystery called "Homicide at the Haunted House" by Beth Dolgner.
Before we dive in, here are the trigger warnings:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Clean
Trigger Warnings:
Murder
Supernatural creatures
Bullying
As you'd expect with a cozy, there isn't anything too dark or heavy. Obviously, there is murder, but it's more about solving the mystery than gruesome details. I love the dark books, as you might know, but I have a soft spot for cozies, too. This was my first book by Beth Dolgner, and I am hooked.
I love this town! Nightmare, Arizona. How fun! It is an old copper mining town turned tourist attraction complete with an old west town street with reenactments of an infamous shoot out. The name alone is intriguing and the multiple groups of people in the town are even more interesting, plus a murder!
I enjoy when the main character isn't typical. Beth brings us Olivia. Olivia is over 40, recently divorced and destitute, and may be more than even she is aware of. I love that despite her fears she dove head first into a murder investigation. It's always key to these type of books. The additional characters are so interesting and mysterious.
The book is the first in a series, however, it does not leave you hanging. It definitely left me craving more stories about Olivia, Nightmare Arizona, and the residents of the Nightmare Sanctuary, though.
Here is my official review:
"Homicide at the Haunted House" was my first peek into the literary works of Beth Dolgner. I absolutely loved it. Olivia is such an every day 40 something but there is something interesting about her too. The town of Nightmare, Arizona is so kooky and wonderful, from the name to the three different types of people to the funny names of the businesses, it is all so fun to read about. Then, you throw in a murder mystery! Hooked. It is such a great read.
