Happy Tuesday, fellow readers! I hope that your month is going well. My attention is already turning to October, because Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday. This week's recommendation brings the spooky afterlife vibe so it's absolutely perfect for my recent mood. I'm pleased to bring you "Graveyard Shift" by Angela Roquet.

First, the trigger warnings:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Clean

Trigger Warnings:

Mention of suicide

Death

Afterlife

Demons

Alcohol consumption

Mentions of sex but no details

"Graveyard Shift" would be most suited for adults and young adults as it does include mentions of hookups and there are couples but no "open door" scenes. Hence, why I rated it as clean. It is all about reapers and the afterlife so of course it's a bit dark. I found it to be very well done.

The characters are varied, well developed, and delightful. My favorite character is Lana. She's the FMC (female main character) and is a 300 year old reaper. I like how she's kind of an every day average Joe type. She hated reaper academy as it was school. She lives alone in a small apartment with crappy furniture. She's overworked and underpaid. She flies mostly under the radar, but there is, of course, that spark that makes her special. All FMCs have it and she's no exception. She's also fierce and has the ability to be more, which I'm sure we'll see her grow more in later books.

The world building is fantastic in this book. I love the idea of purgatory being a central city and not just a vast wasteland. It's like the capital of the underworld. I also love how all religions converged and how Angela handled the subject matter. I'm impressed.

The book doesn't lack in excitement. There is danger and lots of it. There are mysteries and politics. Yes, politics. You'd think that you could escape those in the afterlife, but sadly not. Wherever there is a need for a ruling class, there are politics. But, don't worry, it isn't boring or super dramatic like human politics atleast. You'll just find your typical balancing acts and power struggles. There are lulls and typical daily routines, but I found those times just helped further build the characters and the world rather than them going from one fight to another like a bad action film.

Overall, I enjoyed Lana's journey in this first book and getting acquainted with the other characters. It definitely left me wanting more but without the dreaded cliffhanger. I enjoyed my first peek into Angela Roquet's literary works and look forward to reading more in the future.

Here is my official review.

A transcendent journey to the afterlife.

"Graveyard Shift" transported me to the vivid lands of the afterlife. Angela Roquet did an absolutely fantastic job creating a vast varied world encompassing all religions and exploring what happens to souls after death.

The characters are awesome and well developed especially Lana. I love that she's a regular fly under the radar blue collar kind of girl with so much more lurking underneath. I loved her story and can't wait to read more.

That does it for me for this week, dear readers. Please join me again next week for another wonderful recommendation. Until then, curl up with a good book.
