The Evil Bread

Happy Tuesday, fellow readers. We've had scorching heat, tornado watches, flood watches, and air quality warnings. It's been crazy. It's a good time to hide out and watch a movie or read a good book.

With the upcoming release of Evil Dead: Burn, this week's recommendation gave me The Evil Dead series vibes originally. Please join me in checking out this horror book called The Evil Bread by William Hatchett.

As I mentioned, I thought that this one was going to give me those 80s B movie horror film vibes. Alas, it was not so bad it was good. It was just good. It has a horrific post apocalyptic style vibe. The bread monster is actually terrifying and ingenious.

Usually a book has a main character or a couple of main characters. "The Evil Bread" has many main characters. Gary aka Gaz and Ellis, Alex, Chris, and Barry are the main ones with several strong supporting characters like Evie Green, Richard Rowntree, Marcus, Jenny, Zena, and Dan. Each character is decently developed and each one adds depth to the story.

There are lifestyle commentaries involved with vegans/vegetarians and meat eaters. There are some radical views and political plots. Add in a diabolical plan to basically eradicate mankind and you have one beefy plot. It's definitely an interesting read.

The title and cover gave me hopes for a cheesy 80s B movie style Attack of the Killer Tomatoes meets The Evil Dead but with bread vibe. However, it isn't campy at all. It's horrific, post apocalyptic at points, and quite good. It bounces a bit in the time line, but it is otherwise an easy read. I rated it as four stars as it needs a bit of proofreading/editing for errors.

As I mentioned in my review, the book could use some polishing. I know I am US based and the book is UK based, however, the different spelling of words is not what I mean. There are words that are doubled up or words missing from sentences in many places and a spelling discrepancy over how to spell Vogel whether it's el or al as both are used which is confusing. The amount of errors took me out of the moment in the book which would make me not read it again and that is why I gave it four stars.
