Moss and Malice

Happy Tuesday, fellow readers. It is a stormy one here in my little patch of Pennsylvania. I hope that the weather is more favorable for you. This week, I have one to put on your TBR. Who doesn't love a pre-release? This first in it's series small-town paranormal cozy mystery called "Moss and Malice" by Sadie Finch comes out on August 3rd.

As with most cozies, it does not pack many triggers. It is a fairly easy read though I did find it a bit slow in spots. The great characters, the quirky town, and the intrigue of the mystery will keep you turning the pages, though.

The characters! I love when a book builds a friend group in front of you instead of relying on something pre-existing. I love it even more when the group is diverse and even unlikely. Sadie Finch is very successful in building a diverse and unlikely friend group in this book.

World building. If you've read any of my other blogs, you'll know that I absolutely adore world building. "Moss and Malice" introduces us to St. Alma, a tiny quiet but quirky town in Florida, USA. There's a library, a town square, a town hall, a grocery store, a marina, a restaurant called Clay's, houses, vacation rentals, a police station, and a few closed businesses. There is a lot of room for a lot more town exploration. I do hope that Sadie expands the world building in book two.

It has great characters and an intriguing mystery. I also enjoy the quirky little Florida town. However, it is a bit too easy to figure out, and it gets a little slow at times. There is definitely potential for growth and since this is book one of the series, I look forward to seeing that growth in book two.
