Happy Tuesday, fellow readers! How is June treating you? So far it's been hot here with storms sprinkled in. It's been good weather to curl up in the air conditioning with a nice green tea and a good book. Thst brings me to this week's selection. It's a stand alone urban fantasy called "Bitten Shifter" by Brogan Thomas. Let's check it out!
Before we rush in, we'll stop to give the trigger warnings.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Trigger Warnings:

Death/Murder
This one threw me off a bit. I was not expecting a fated mate situation in a book that is not labeled as romance. I would definitely call this one a romantasy. It is clean though, which is something else I'm not used to with fated mates. That isn't a bad thing at all, just unexpected. There is definitely chemistry and nudity since they are shifters but no spice besides a kiss or two.
You guys, I absolutely have to gush about this FMC! Lark is spectacular. I love an older FMC. At 47 and being a human, she definitely fits as an older main character. What I love about that is that she's established. She has a husband, a house, a history, and a successful career. So many books have a young FMC who is still establishing herself or finding herself. It's refreshing to have a more seasoned character. I especially love that Lark is comfortable in her own skin. She's athletic, and she doesn't mind aging. That's beautiful and so different. She's amazing in her power, skills, but most of all her calm sound reasoning and ability to adapt. She doesn't wallow in self-pity or freak out in the face of impossibly hard situations. I absolutely admire her iron resolve. The other characters are, of course, interesting as well and just add even more with their interactions with Lark. Especially Riker with his signature snark.
World building. I love when an author gives us a whole world. Braxton has given us a country with unique sectors, citizens, rules, and interactions. Even in just getting a glimpse of each sector, I want more! I'd love to explore each area in depth which tells me that the world building is very successful.
It's a bit of a fast paced adventure that will keep you entertained.
Here is my official review.
A fated mate, forced shifter book with added magic including romance but minus the spice. It's a different recipe than I'm used to, however, Lark is such a strong, amazing, older FMC, that I think she could pull off anything. Lark's no nonsense calm reasoning and her compassion for others, even when they don't deserve it, endeared me to her immediately. There's so much to love and the hardships only make her even better. A fabulous read.
